Highlights from January 24, 2008

Tim was back at the Pickin Porch' this evening, and as usual he kicked off the show by leading everyone in the "Pledge To The Flag". After that he promptly "got the show on the road"!

The Pickin' Porch Show is proudly supported by a host of volunteers as well as several corporate sponsors, one of which is Chick-fil-A. Wild Ray Parlier and the friendly folks at Chick-fil-A feed the bands each week, and Tommy Carroll always enjoys getting a "chicken ticket" redeemable for a Chick-fil-A meal when he tells the audience what the cows always say...

Slim Pickins, a group of talented youngsters from Tennessee High School was the first group to take the stage this evening. While these teenagers may be young, they certainly proved that they put a lot of time and energy into their performances. They treated us to a number of wonderful Country tunes including "Grandpa, Tell Me 'Bout The good Ole Days" by The Judds, "How Blue" a very popular song by Reba McEntire, and John Denver's timeless hit "Country Roads".

They also performed two faultless a capella numbers: "Talk About Sufferin'" and "Babylon's-A-Fallin'". The members of the band are Sydney Raines on accordion, Jessie Minton on fiddle, Zach Worley on guitar and mandolin, Alex Moore on bass, Kris Mangrum on vocals and Carlson Keller on guitar. If you'd like to have these folks perform at your next event, contact us and find out how.

The evening's second group of entertainers were Pickin' Porch favorites The Skinner Family. This family is simply bursting with talent! The youngest is Alyssa, who at a mere 9 years of age is already an ace on the dobro. Her older brother Zayn is all of 12, and he has already mastered the mandolin. I just wonder what they'll take on next?

Then, of course there's Mom and Dad! Jason and Jennifer Skinner are two of the most devoted parents I have ever met, and they sure are raising a fine family. This gang performed several traditional Bluegrass instrumentals as well as the old Reno and Smiley tune "Won't You Kiss Me One More Time".

Our own Teddy Helton is always willing to help out by playing bass when the Skinner Family is here, and tonight the crowd talked him into singing the little ditty "Left Over Me".

That's all for this week here at the Pickin' Porch. Join us again next week when we'll have Bill McCall & Friends and Acoustic Faith pickin' and singin' up on the stage!
