Highlights from October 4, 2007
This week's show began with guest host Frank Carmack reminding everyone to be sure and come out to the ACMA monthly meeting scheduled for October 8 at 6:30pm here at the Pickin' Porch. Frank lead us all in the "Pledge to the Flag" and acknowledged our fine sponsors.

Starting off the evening was Appalachian Trail. I must admit this is one of my personal favorite bluegrass bands. They played such instrumentals as "Sledd Ride", "Bill Cheatham" and "Turkey in the Straw".

Appalachian Trail includes several fine musicians and vocalists. Vickie Austin plays bass, sings lead vocals and writes some of the groups music. She has been named the 2007 Kingsport, Tennessee Idol. Vickie's husband Tommy Austin is the bands mandolin player, sings lead and harmony vocals and is also a songwriter for the band.

The rest of this exceptional group is Matthew Bright on guitar...

and Matthew Cruby on the banjo. Both these young men are marvelous performers. The band invited Rex Boggs from Bristol, Tennessee up on stage to sing a couple of tunes for us. He sang "Long Hard Road" and "Wayfaring Stranger". The crowd seemed to really enjoy his music. He plays with a band called Ole,Fat, & Slo and will be playing some benefit shows this fall at the Barter Theatre and the Paramount Center. Please check out their websites for more information.

Next up was an old Pickin' Porch friend "Lonesome Will" Mullins. Will always puts on a fine show, and this week was no exception. He played a couple of Jimmy Martin tunes "Going Ape Over You" and "Sunny Side Of The Mountain" and sang a beautiful a cappella version of "He's My All In All". Will will be bringing his band back to the Pickin' Porch stage in November. Keep a check on our schedule for upcoming shows.

Appalachian Trail came back onstage after a short breather. They agreed to do some requests from the audience. "Pale Rider" and "A Christmas Tear", both penned by Tommy and "Can't Hold Onto Much", written by Vickie. If you're interested in seeing this group in person you can find them at "Austin East" open house on Saturday, October 13 from 9:00am-2:00pm. Take I26 to the Eastern Star Road exit and follow the signs. They will also be at Farmers Daughter Restaurant on Hwy. 107 outside of Greenville, Tennessee October 20 from 4:00pm-7:00pm. Be sure and check them out!

That's all for this week folks. Next time we'll have Old Dogs New Tricks and Lucky Dollar Band. Come on by and visit with us awhile. Remember the Song of the Mountains series continues this Saturday, October 6 at 7:00pm. Bands in this month's lineup include World International Blue Grass Band, No Speed Limit, Jim Lloyd, and Cleghorn. Log on to www.songofthemountains.org for directions or to purchase tickets.
